Cyprus’ thousand year old capital is its only inland city. Cosmopolitan and European, Nicosia is the island’s centre for government, commerce and trade, as well as home to foreign embassies and consulates.
The Chrisaliniotissa Church is the oldest of many Byzantine churches in Nicosia. The famous Famagusta Gate is one of the three entrances to the old city. Beyond the capital lie the ancient city kingdom of Idalion, the Tamassos city kingdom in Politiko, and the Machairas monastery which dates back to 1148. The modern heart of Cyprus, it effortlessly combines the old with the new. Right alongside the biggest global names in shopping is the compact old town with its sixteenth century fortress walls, narrow alleys and historical monuments. Visitors are spoilt for choice. The Leventis Municipal Museum, Cyprus Museum and National Struggle Museum all provide fascinating insights into the island’s rich cultural and historical heritage. |
